Back to Pen and Paper

Most days I’ve got a notepad nearby, usually for quick scribbles or layout sketches while I work. But recently I realised it had been a while since I properly sat down and just drew.

So one weekend, I opened a clean page, grabbed a black fineliner, and gave myself a simple task: fill the whole sheet. No pencil, no plan. Just draw.

The loose theme ended up being nautical. Lighthouses, anchors, sea creatures—whatever came to mind. I wanted the sketches to feel like old woodcut prints. Thick lines, a bit of texture, slightly imperfect. It was more about capturing the feel than getting every detail right.

As the page filled up, a style started to emerge. I could see how it might work for packaging or signage. One idea led to another, and it quickly felt like the beginnings of a brand concept.

That page of drawings turned into a mini project: a fake coastal bar called Low-Tide. I mocked up posters, coasters, and a few slogans. Just for fun, but also to see how quickly something can take shape once there’s a strong visual language behind it.

Turns out a bit of time offline with a pen in hand still goes a long way.
